Choosing treatment for a teen is one of the most difficult decisions a family can face—and we’re here to make that journey a little lighter. Muir Wood was built around a simple belief: teens heal best when they’re surrounded by compassionate experts who understand the full picture—mental health, substance use, family dynamics, school, and self-worth.
With gender-specific campuses, small caseloads, and board-certified clinicians on-site daily, we provide highly personalized care in a safe, structured, and nurturing environment. Our outcomes speak for themselves, but it’s our heart and commitment to each teen’s future that families remember most.

Krista Merlino – May 2024
“Our child had medication resistant severe depression. Muir Wood helped find the right medication and provided a supportive environment, over Covid, no less. My child is thriving and we both agree that even though it was a hard period, it was the best choice to get them treatment. The tutors worked with his teachers and he maintained a 4.0 while getting better.”
Tomasina Burgess – June 2024
“Ruby had a very positive experience overall both times. Many programs make lots of promises and don’t deliver. Muir wood was a transformational experience for Ruby and I think the experience of being part of a community of peers was especially helpful. I’m a mental health professional myself and have already recommended Muir Wood to friends with teens who are struggling.”
Sasha A. Blum – September 2023
“There really are other families that are struggling in more or less the same ways that we are,” she shares in the video below. “I think there’s a way that addiction can make people feel like it’s only happening to them, and it’s really not. It’s behind so many closed doors. And I only wish that more people would come out and get the help that they deserve and that is there to be had. I’m really grateful we found it.”

These terms are often used interchangeably but have important distinctions. While inpatient treatment usually describes short-term, hospital-based care, residential treatment refers to care provided in a home-like setting where individuals live on-site during a treatment stay of 30 to 90 days. Residential treatment’s focus is on longer-term healing and personal growth. Learn more about residential vs. inpatient treatment.
Adolescent treatment requires a very different approach that focuses on “habilitation”, or teaching psychosocial skills, rather than rehabilitation. Teens need specialized support in developing healthy coping mechanisms, while adults often build on pre-existing recovery skills. Teen treatment also considers developmental differences and the high correlation between substance use and co-occurring mental health issues in adolescents. Treating teens requires a team of specialists trained in treating the unique mental health and substance use conditions that affect teens.

Yes, we provide gender-separate treatment to support a more focused healing environment. This allows adolescents to be more open about personal challenges, build strong peer connections, and work through sensitive issues without the pressures, drama, or distraction inherent in co-ed treatment settings.
Yes, residents of Muir Wood’s residential dual-diagnosis programs attend youth-oriented 12-Step meetings in the community each week. These meetings introduce teens to positive peer groups and recognize that recovery can be both meaningful and enjoyable. Meeting other young people committed to sober living helps teens build support networks that last beyond treatment. Learn more about introduction to the 12-Step program.
