Better known as our Penngrove Program, Muir Wood’s residential primary mental health program for girls serves clients who have mental health concerns like anxiety, depression, or trauma. Our treatment approach focuses solely on mental health issues and stands separate and apart from our girls dual-diagnosis programs that address the co-occurrence of mental health and substance use disorders. Learn more about how we can help your family heal.

Understanding the Plight of Teen Girls

Muir Wood understands the unique challenges faced by teen girls in today’s world and the trauma that can be a byproduct of social media, bullying, relationships, peer pressure, physical and emotional abuse, and more. Our residential primary mental health programs for youth are dedicated to the treatment of adolescent girls mental health disorders. We specialize in the treatment of generalized and social anxiety, panic attacks, depression, self-injury, mood and personality disorders, and trauma.

Our program is accredited by the Joint Commission, considered by many professionals to be the gold standard in healthcare program accreditation. We are also certified by the California Department of Health Care Services, licensed by the California Department of Social Services, and verified by Psychology Today as a trusted teen treatment provider. The program is staffed by a highly credentialed team of therapists, supported by full-time psychiatrists and nurses.

We believe that teen girls have the capacity to grow and support one other if given the right tools. “It is so powerful to see the capacity that human beings have for change, for healing, and to empower and support one other,” shares our therapist in the video below. Explore our other videos.

A Comprehensive Therapeutic Approach

The varied treatment modalities that Muir Wood uses to address mental illness in teens are all evidence-based. All of our young clients are treated with proven approaches including:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which challenges unconstructive thinking and behavioral patterns

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), which aids in the management of strong emotions

Seeking Safety Therapy, which helps teens with trauma and PTSD heal

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), which teaches teens to accept their emotions and live more mindfully

In addition, we offer modalities such as art therapy, music therapy, breath work, health and physical education, and trauma-informed movement groups. When used in concert with evidence-based therapies, experiential therapies give teens a comprehensive toolset for healing.

We understand that no two individuals or families are the same, and every teen needs individualized support to thrive. We provide person-centered care that focuses on meeting our young clients where they are. Treatment planning reflects the collaborative efforts of the client and their treatment team. The treatment plan takes into consideration the individual teen’s strengths, needs, abilities, preferences, and goals for treatment.

Additional Support for On-Campus Academic Learning

Our residential primary mental health program for girls features an on-campus Muir Wood Learning Center, which is recognized by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) as a supplemental learning program. Teens attend the program 15 hours per week and are supported by credentialed single- and multiple-subject teachers. The program enables teens to maintain continuity with their home schools, ensuring a smooth transition back to the classroom following treatment.
