Teen Behavioral Health Treatment
When your teen is struggling with anxiety, depression, or other mental health issues, finding the right level of care can feel urgent and overwhelming. Teen residential treatment at Muir Wood provides a calm, supportive environment that fosters healing, structure, and stability. Here, young people ages 12–17 receive short-term, residential care tailored to their unique needs. Each teen’s treatment plan is developed by licensed professionals who specialize in adolescent behavioral health and co-occurring disorders. Individual therapy sessions, group work, and family therapy are paired with academic support through our WASC-accredited school program—ensuring that progress in treatment aligns with success in the classroom.
Our trauma-informed approach incorporates a variety of evidence-based modalities, including art therapy, mindfulness, and skills-based learning that strengthens emotion regulation and real-world life skills. When clinically appropriate, medication management supports treatment goals and helps teens achieve balance and clarity.
Care is delivered on gender-separate campuses, in safe, focused environments where teens can connect with peers who share similar lived experiences. Every teen—including those who are transgender, nonbinary, or exploring their identity—receives individualized, affirming support that honors who they are.
Families remain active participants throughout care, learning new strategies for communication, boundary-setting, and emotional connection. As treatment progresses, our team coordinates a thoughtful discharge and aftercare plan—whether stepping down to our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) or connecting with trusted community providers—to sustain the progress made here.
Most teens stay at Muir Wood for 45–60 days, depending on their clinical needs. Some may benefit from up to 90 days of treatment. During this time, teens engage in daily group and individual therapy, academic instruction, and supervised peer interaction. Before discharge, our team develops a continuing care plan that may include outpatient services, step-down to an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), or connection to local support services for long-term recovery.

In comparison to another residential facility, we found Muir Wood to be focused on helping the child vs. just running a business. The Dr.’s and therapists were great, our child made progress after a long time of spiraling downward, and expenses and the entire process was transparent.

Family-Integrated Mental Health Care
At Muir Wood, mental health recovery doesn’t happen in isolation—it happens within relationships. That’s why family involvement is built into every stage of care. Parents and caregivers participate in weekly family therapy, receive regular updates from their teen’s clinical team, and learn practical tools to reduce conflict and strengthen connection. Together, families learn how to communicate more clearly, respond to emotional distress with empathy, and create a structure that supports stability at home.
When treatment ends, our work together continues. We coordinate follow-up care with trusted outpatient providers and offer 16 weeks of parent coaching focused on real-world application. Teens stay connected through alumni touchpoints, ensuring they feel supported as they re-enter daily life. The result is more than symptom relief—it’s a family system that understands how to sustain emotional health together.

Petaluma Teen Mental Health FAQs
What is residential treatment for teen mental health?
Residential treatment provides 24/7 clinical care and structure for teens who need more support than outpatient therapy can provide. At Muir Wood Teen in Petaluma, adolescents live on campus and follow a daily schedule that includes therapy, academics, recreation, and family involvement—all within a safe, therapeutic environment designed for emotional healing and growth.
When is residential treatment the right choice for my teen?
If your teen’s anxiety, depression, or emotional distress has become overwhelming—or they’re no longer improving with weekly therapy—residential treatment may be appropriate. Signs can include major changes in mood or motivation, isolation, self-harm, panic attacks, or difficulty functioning at school or home. Our admissions team can help you determine whether this level of care is the best fit.
What conditions do you treat at Muir Wood’s Petaluma campus?
We specialize in treating a wide range of adolescent mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, trauma and PTSD, OCD, ADHD, disordered eating, and self-harm or suicidal ideation. Each teen receives an individualized treatment plan that addresses both their mental health and related academic or family challenges.
What happens after my teen completes the program?
Before discharge, our team develops a continuing care plan that includes coordination with outpatient therapists, psychiatrists, and schools. Many families transition to our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) as the next step. Ongoing coaching and alumni programming help sustain progress and provide continued connection.
Does Muir Wood accept insurance?
Yes. We are in-network with many major insurance providers and verify benefits quickly. Before treatment begins, your coordinator will review all financial details—such as co-pays, deductibles, and coverage limits—to ensure transparency. We do not currently accept Medicaid but can assist with documentation for out-of-network reimbursement when possible.
Is the program gender-specific and inclusive?
Yes. Muir Wood provides gender-at-birth housing for safety and comfort, while maintaining an affirming and inclusive environment for all identities. Our clinicians are trained to provide gender-sensitive, trauma-informed care that respects every teen’s individuality.
What are my payment options?
We’re in-network with most major insurers and can verify benefits quickly. Your coordinator will explain any deductible, co-pay, or co-insurance before you begin. If we’re out-of-network, we’ll explore single-case agreements when appropriate and provide documentation for reimbursement. Our goal is to reduce financial friction so your family can focus on care. Please note, we do not accept Medi-Cal or Medicaid at this time.
