Teen Intensive Outpatient Treatment Program
Teen struggles with mental health, trauma, or substance abuse can be challenging. They may be falling behind at school, struggling with mood swings, or distancing from family. Our Adolescent Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) in Petaluma supports teen mental health ages 12–17 without removing them from home or school.
Over 3–4 days a week, teens engage in evidence-based therapy, including individual sessions, group therapy, and family support, to build coping skills, strengthen communication, and restore routines. Teens will receive thoughtful support for mental health issues, substance use, and co-occurring challenges. Think of it as a right-sized structure—more supportive than traditional outpatient therapy, yet flexible enough to complement ongoing care without the intensive, 24/7 structure of residential treatment.
If you’re unsure whether IOP, PHP, or a higher level of care is the right fit for your teen, our team will guide you with personalized advice to determine the safest and most effective path forward for your loved one.

Encourages values-based choices, mindfulness, and meaningful action, even when life feels overwhelming.

Petaluma Teen IOP FAQs
What are the benefits of Teen IOP in Petaluma?
Teen IOP provides the right-sized structure to help adolescents (12–17) make progress in mental health and substance use treatment while staying engaged in daily life. Meeting after school 3–4 days a week for about three hours, teens build coping skills, practice them at home and in school, and bring successes and challenges back to group therapy. Families are actively involved through regular family sessions and parent education, supporting safety, stability, and steady growth.
What is an Adolescent Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)?
An adolescent IOP is a structured, after-school treatment program for teens who need more support than weekly therapy but do not require 24/7 residential care. At Muir Wood Petaluma, teens receive therapist-led group sessions, individual therapy, family sessions, and parent education. This program addresses primary mental health conditions, substance use, and co-occurring disorders in one coordinated plan.
When should my Teen attend a mental health or substance use IOP?
Teen IOP is ideal when a teen can safely remain at home but is not improving with weekly therapy alone. Signs include declining grades, school avoidance, persistent anxiety or depression, mood swings, escalating home conflict, emerging or episodic substance use, and difficulty managing stress or emotions. If a higher level of care is needed, we help coordinate a safe transition.
How do I choose the right Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for my teen?
Choose an adolescent-specific program, staffed with licensed clinicians, offers evidence-based therapies (e.g., CBT, DBT), includes family involvement, small group sessions, clear safety protocols, and coordination with schools and other providers. Ask about schedule, wait times, insurance coverage, and aftercare options. We guide families to determine if Petaluma Teen IOP is the right fit.
What payment options are available for a teen IOP?
We're in-network with many major insurers and can verify benefits quickly. Your coordinator will explain any deductible, co-pay, or co-insurance upfront. For out-of-network coverage, we explore single-case agreements and provide documentation for reimbursement, reducing financial stress so families can focus on care.
How is teen IOP different from residential treatment?
Residential treatment provides 24/7 care for teens in crisis. Teen IOP provides structured, clinically intensive care after school, allowing teens to live at home and attend school. Many families use IOP as a step-down from residential care or a step-up from weekly therapy, depending on clinical need.
Can teens without substance use issues be admitted?
Yes. Teen IOP addresses both primary mental health conditions (anxiety, depression, trauma, OCD, ADHD) and substance use (alcohol, cannabis, stimulants, opioids). Integrated care for co-occurring disorders is provided when both needs are present.
Do you treat adolescents with eating disorders?
We do not provide specialty eating disorder programs requiring medical or nutritional supervision (e.g., anorexia, bulimia). We do treat disordered eating when it occurs alongside other mental health concerns and is safe for an IOP setting. During admission, we screen carefully and, if necessary, provide a warm referral to a specialized program.
