This environment isn’t just aesthetically calming—it plays a functional role in treatment. Exposure to nature, opportunities for movement throughout the day, and architecture that prioritizes light and openness all contribute to emotional regulation and mental clarity. Girls often settle into the therapeutic process more quickly here, and engage more authentically once they do.

These locations operate on a hub-and-spoke model. Magnolia House is a smaller satellite residence — an intentionally quieter space for evenings and smaller-group decompression, with girls joining the full group at the main hub for daytime programming.

Girls Residential Treatment in Sonoma County

Muir Wood provides residential care built specifically for adolescents facing serious mental health challenges—integrating clinical expertise, family partnership, and continued academics to create a foundation for meaningful recovery. We focus on primary mental health and dual diagnosis treatment, serving teens whether or not substance use is part of the picture. Every teen undergoes a thorough clinical assessment so their care team can build a plan around their actual needs—not a one-size-fits-all protocol.

The Lohrman program is designed for adolescent girls whose challenges have exceeded what outpatient or school-based services can address, providing around-the-clock clinical care in a setting that feels safe and unhurried. Surrounded by the open landscapes and quiet beauty of Sonoma County, the campus offers a pace of life that stands in sharp contrast to the chaos many teens have been living in. Girls walk between buildings through fresh air, spend time outdoors as part of their daily schedule, and wind down each evening in comfortable, home-style residences. This sense of spaciousness and calm isn’t incidental—it directly supports the regulation of the nervous system that makes deeper therapeutic work possible. Treatment is trauma-informed, clinically rigorous, and focused on helping each teen build the internal resources she needs to sustain progress after discharge.

The typical length of stay at Muir Wood ranges from 45 to 60 days, though some teens benefit from extended treatment of up to 90 days. A multidisciplinary team of licensed clinicians guides each girl’s care. Housing and programming are gender-separate, creating an environment where girls can focus without distraction—while treatment itself remains personalized, inclusive, and affirming of every teen’s identity.

Family connection is woven throughout the treatment experience. Parents participate in structured family therapy, receive regular updates and coaching from clinical staff, and collaborate directly with the care team on transition planning—so the work that begins at Lohrman continues meaningfully at home.

Each day at Lohrman follows a purposeful rhythm. Mornings and afternoons are filled with therapy, academics, and outdoor activities that build emotional awareness and practical coping skills. Evenings offer quieter time in residences designed to feel like home—space to rest, reflect, and connect with peers. This intentional balance of engagement and restoration helps teens feel held without feeling confined, making it easier to show up fully for the work of recovery.

My daughter is at the Petaluma Site. She has been there for about 40 days and the therapist has been very communicative. I feel apart of her treatment and have been updated weekly as well as a fast response anytime I have had questions. The support has been great and I love the parent classes. I have learned a lot in this time.

Lorhman Campus FAQs

Why should I choose a residential program in Sonoma County for my daughter?

The Lorhman campus offers a calm, nature-rich environment that supports emotional regulation, reflection, and connection. Being treated closer to home in the North Bay allows families to stay involved while giving teens the space they need to reset and heal.

What makes residential treatment helpful for teen girls specifically?

Adolescent girls often experience mental health challenges differently, especially around relationships, self-image, and emotional expression. A girls-only residential setting creates a sense of safety and understanding that supports deeper therapeutic work and peer connection.

Is mental health or substance use the primary focus of treatment?

Mental health is always the primary focus. When substance use is present, it is addressed as part of a broader clinical picture—not in isolation—so girls receive care that treats the root causes, not just the symptoms.

What does a typical day look like at the Lohrman campus?

Days include individual and group therapy, academic instruction, structured activities, and time for rest and reflection—balanced within a calm, predictable routine. Time spent outdoors and in thoughtfully designed shared spaces supports regulation, connection, and emotional safety throughout the day.

How does the academic program work during residential treatment?

Teens continue their education through Muir Wood’s WASC-accredited academic program. Instruction is individualized and coordinated to reduce stress while helping students rebuild confidence and stay engaged in learning.

How involved will I be while my daughter is in treatment?

Parents and caregivers are actively involved through scheduled communication, family therapy sessions, education, and collaborative aftercare planning. We view families as partners throughout the healing process.

What happens when my daughter is ready to leave residential care?

Discharge planning begins early and is tailored to each teen. Families leave with a clear aftercare plan that may include outpatient therapy, intensive outpatient treatment, school support, and ongoing family services.
