A Day in the Life at Muir Wood

Families often ask what their teen's days will actually look like. At Muir Wood, every day follows a steady, predictable rhythm that balances real clinical work with school, movement, rest, and connection. Mornings open with goals and group therapy, afternoons bring academics and time outdoors, and evenings wind down into quiet reflection. The structure is intentional, giving teens room to focus on healing without feeling confined.

A calm, nature-rich residential treatment campus surrounded by open Sonoma County landscape.

A Purposeful Daily Rhythm

A steady schedule that balances therapy, learning, movement, and rest.

Mornings: Goals and Check-In

Each day opens with breakfast and a brief goals group, where every teen names something to work toward that day. This simple ritual sets a calm, intentional tone and helps teens step into the work ahead feeling grounded.

The Therapeutic Core

The heart of each day is therapy: small group sessions, process groups, and skills work led by licensed clinicians. Teens practice regulating emotions and building real coping tools in a supportive, peer-based setting.

Academics and School

Through our WASC-accredited academic program, teens keep up with coursework in small, supported classes. Staying engaged in learning rebuilds confidence and keeps the path forward feeling possible.

Recreation and the Outdoors

Afternoons include recreation, movement, and time in nature. Fresh air and physical activity support emotional regulation and give teens a healthy outlet, making them a core part of the day rather than an afterthought.

Evenings: Rest and Reflection

Evenings slow down with dinner, a daily reflection, and quiet self-care time in home-like residences. This built-in space to decompress helps teens process the day and rest well before it begins again.

The Therapies Woven Through Each Day

Small Group Therapy

In small, consistent groups, teens explore what they are going through and learn from peers facing similar challenges.

Somatic Experiencing

A body-based approach that helps teens notice and release stress held in the body, supporting recovery from trauma.

Music Therapy

Guided music sessions give teens a creative, non-verbal way to express emotion and connect with others.

Art Therapy

Making art opens a gentle path to process feelings that can be hard to put into words.

DBT and CBT Skills

Practical skills groups teach teens to manage distress, challenge unhelpful thoughts, and respond to hard moments.

Family Therapy (Weekly)

Weekly family sessions bring parents into the work, rebuilding the communication and trust that continues at home.

Added Support for Substance Use

Relapse Prevention

For teens working through substance use, structured groups build practical strategies to recognize triggers and stay on track.

Recovery Groups

Dedicated recovery time helps teens understand substance use as part of a fuller clinical picture, not in isolation.

Peer-Led Meetings

Optional peer-led meetings offer connection and shared accountability with others on a similar path.

Life Outside the Therapy Room

Hikes and Time in Nature

Guided hikes through Sonoma County's parks, beaches, and redwoods. Time outdoors builds calm, confidence, and a healthy connection to the natural world.

Sports and Movement

Bowling, indoor rock climbing, mini-golf, skating, and disc golf. Active outings channel energy in positive ways and build teamwork and self-esteem.

Exciting Adventures

Laser tag, escape rooms, and go-kart racing. High-energy activities let teens experience healthy excitement and shared accomplishment with peers.

Museums and Tours

Marine science centers, factory tours, and historic parks. Hands-on learning experiences spark curiosity and broaden horizons beyond the classroom.

Pottery and Crafts

Pottery studios, painting, tie-dye, and hands-on creative projects. Making something by hand offers a calming, rewarding outlet for self-expression.
