Muir Wood offers your son a safe, nurturing environment within a beautiful homelike setting in Northern California’s Sonoma County. Each campus is a safe haven where one learns to manage difficult emotions, develop self-care and recovery skills, explore more effective ways of communicating, and cultivate a sense of self.
Our Locations
Muir Wood Adolescent & Family Services boasts two idyllic residential locations. Herron House is an extraordinary estate that sits on two scenic acres and features ultra-comfortable living accommodations for a maximum of six boys. This campus offers teens a calm and serene setting with plenty of outdoor space conducive to discovering a sense of self. Just around the corner, Skillman Lane is a modern country farmhouse, designed for ten boys, located on six expansive acres with a lake and endless green fields. Each location provides additional buildings with space for individual and group therapy sessions, on-site classrooms, physical fitness, art and music therapy.
Nutrition at Muir Wood
Balanced nutrition is extremely important as your son’s body and brain repair from the effects of substance use. Our in-house chef prepares fresh, nutrient-packed meals each day that the boys enjoy together in our family-style dining room.
In addition to providing a diet that optimizes recovery, our goal is to help boys change their relationship with food, so they begin to value food as a source of nutrition and energy. The boys help maintain an organic garden on-site, which is a source of ingredients in many meals. Our chef works with each boy to address food concerns and find creative ways to incorporate more fruit and vegetables into his diet.
Physical Fitness
Teen boys need physical activity to help them maintain balanced emotions and to act as an outlet for their adolescent energy. In addition, physical activity helps to build confidence and mastery during this critical period of self-discovery.
Residents meet with our certified personal trainer two times each week at a local gym, where they are guided through a variety of cardio and strength-training workouts, stretching and range of motion exercises and CrossFit. Our trainer is an integral part of the boys’ recovery program, helping them find the resolve and self-respect to care for their bodies. In addition, our Sunday Adventure Therapy program lets boys enjoy adventure trips to great locations throughout Northern California. And on campus, the boys are frequently engaged in impromptu games of basketball, soccer and ping-pong during breaks from their academic and therapy work.
Life Skill Development
As a resident at Muir Wood, your son will have the opportunity to learn valuable life skills. The shared living space brings with it expectations for behavior and personal responsibility that are firmly and lovingly enforced. He will be expected to help with group chores, take care of his own laundry, and maintain his living area to specific standards. Many of the boys who stay with us have little experience in caring for their belongings and maintaining personal responsibility at this level. Our staff lovingly teaches these skills and reinforces firm expectations for group living.
