The Muir Wood Outpatient Program located in San Rafael, CA, serves both adolescent males and females ages 12-19 with substance use disorder and co-occurring behavioral health issues. Our highly credentialed team works closely with teens and families to develop an individualized treatment plan that may include group therapy, cognitive behavior therapy, dialectal behavior therapy, and when needed, medication management and neuropsychological testing. All participants receive this individualized treatment plan, as well as a “home agreement”, and a discharge plan. There is an ongoing assessment updated weekly to ensure that your teen is in the proper program, and so that we can track progress along the way. Based on the assessment, we can offer individualized treatment groups that match the needs of your teen.
The outpatient program has four separate and distinct tracks that are solution-based and tailored for individual treatment needs. All participants are assessed prior to admission to determine the appropriate level of care necessary. Muir Wood also collaborates with community providers to best support participants’ long-term recovery and sustained healing for their families.
Levels of Care
The Muir Wood Outpatient Program has four levels of care:
- Level Three: The Day Treatment Track
- Level Two: The Intensive Outpatient Track
- Level One: The Outpatient Track
- The UA or the Outpatient Monitoring Track/Aftercare
Level Three (Day Treatment Track) – The nine hour per week Day Treatment Track focuses on relapse prevention, managing emotions and life/recovery skills, and 12-step education. Participation in community 12-step meeting is strongly encouraged and monitored when necessary. Teens are also provided one individual therapy session per week and are expected to participate in one individual family therapy session per week. Parents are also expected to attend the weekly multi-family process group and are encourage in attending a weekly Al-Anon meeting. Other groups and activities in the program include a dialectical behavior group (DBT), relapse prevention and education group, gender-separate and co-ed process groups, and weekend goal setting. Twice weekly drug testing is provided.
Level Two (Intensive Outpatient Track) – The Intensive Outpatient Track consists of six hours of weekly programming weekly, with a primary focus on relapse prevention. Teens attend weekly relapse prevention groups and are assigned curriculum based on preventing relapse, are expected to attend 12-step meetings in the community or at the center, participate in weekly individual therapy and weekly individual family therapy, and actively participate in weekly process and goal setting groups. Parents are also required to attend the weekly multi-family process group and attend once weekly Al-Anon meetings. Twice weekly drug testing is provided.
Level One (Outpatient Track) – The Outpatient Track includes three hours a week of programming aimed at supporting teens and their families without the need for the intensive support and services of levels two and three. Outpatient Track participants receive a weekly individual therapy and once weekly individual family therapy. Based on clinical need, participants in this track may be asked to attend relapse prevention groups and complete related assignments. Once weekly drug testing is provided.
UA Program (Outpatient Monitoring Track) – In the Outpatient Monitoring track, participants receive twice-weekly drug testing (UA) and meet with their Counselor to review the results. A positive UA will result in immediate intervention and possible placement in a higher level of outpatient or residential care.
